MyCage at GRA 'Endexam' exhibition

MyCage is the final project of my studies at the Rietveld academy in Amsterdam. It Started a year and a half ego with a playful music performance at the glass pavilion of the Rietveld academy (see the post) and sins then developed greatly and was now exhibited and performed at the Gerrit Rietveld academy graduation exhibition that started at the 03.07 till the 07.07.2013.

'MyCage' is an interactive sound and music installation composed out of an array of self made musical instruments. The installation also doubles as a reactive stage for a unique music performance.
Each of the musical instruments takes a different approach, from hybrid instruments combining multiple sound sources with a non conventional way to modify them alongside acoustic self made instruments and organic looking Hi-Tech textile instrument that react to any touch or vibration.

Here are a couple of images from the performance and the video of the full performance.

P.S. thanks Gilles van Leeuwen for filming my performance.

Safe Distance - the video clip

Last couple of month I am working on a music video for my own piece of music Safe Distance.

Safe Distance is a music clip portraying a young girl playing and dancing outdoors while an intruder walks in, and the way in which she defends her self.

My end exam project

In the past study year I was busy building unique musical instruments with an end goal of performing a music performance in the end exam event of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy.
each of the musical instruments takes a different approach, from hybrid instruments combining many sound sources and improvised way to modify them alongside acoustic DIY instruments and organic looking Hi-Tech textile instrument that react to any touch or vibration.

More pictures and videos are coming right after the end exam exhibition week of the Rietveld academy.

FreeStyle

In the last couple of month I was working on a video in the 'filmworkshop' of the Audio-Visual department (V.A.V) of the Rietveld academy in Amsterdam.

We were able to use professional equipment in the 'Tungsten' film studios in the north of Amsterdam thanks to the Rietveld academy and Martin Grootenboer (the owner of the studios).

I filmed a vary good free style dancer (Gregory 'Shaggy' Albertzoon) dancing to a vary fast beat using a high frame rate pro camera (RED One) in order to slow him down and make a slow dance accompanied by a slow music which I composed for the film.

The final video

It is recommended to open in Youtube (small button on the right bottom) and select 720 HD

MyCage

Three month ego I started to work on a music installation \ performance called 'MyCage'.

It is a collection of self built musical instruments, modified musical \ non musical toys and machines that all together becomes a sort of modular synthesizer which I am controlling and creating music \ soundscapes.

The first public tryout was performed in the Heesterveld Storage Space Exhibition #7, and later in the Glass Pavilion of the Gerrit Rietveld academy in Amsterdam as a part of a three day exhibition of the Audio-Visual department of the Rietveld academy which I am studying in.

On Saturday the 16th of June (one day after the Audio-Visual exhibition) I moved the 'Mycage' installation from the Glass pavilion of the Rietveld Academy to the 'Frascati' Theater in the center of Amsterdam for the 'Out of control' show - curated by Hans Muller (part of the annual 'Holland festival') the show was great and all the tickets were sold.
On the 29th of June I will perform with 'MyCage' in the Storage Space Exhibition #8 Terrarium in the Heesterveld art community.
see you all on the 29th... P.S the entrance is free and so are the drinks!

Storage Space line of art and media exhibitions focuses mainly on creating group exhibitions in the context of so called ‘problematic’ locations and neighborhoods.

The Storage Space Exhibitions are held in and around the empty storage spaces of one of Heesterveld blocks (1 t/m 87) in the Bijlmer, Amsterdam Zuidoost. The Bijlmer area was renowned in the past for its criminal activities, drugs and violence and the small cement storage spaces were used in the past by drug dealers as places to conduct their business or reside.
